McFarlane Halo 5 Spartan Locke Figure Review & Photos

It’s been literally years since McFarlane Toys released an entire series of new Halo figures containing more than three new figures, but the drought is at an end and the long-awaited Halo 5: Guardians figures have arrived! And what better character to begin the reviews with than the new protagonist of Halo 5–Agent Locke! The new McFarlane Spartan Locke figure is now available online and in some stores–but is he everything I hoped he would be? Well… not exactly…

The Right:

There was an era when I considered McFarlane Toys figures to be overpriced compared to collector figures from mass-market companies such as Mattel and Hasbro. Those days are gone–and then some!

Whereas typical Mattel and Hasbro figures retail for $20 each now, McFarlane has drawn their line in the sand at $12-$14, and for that, I applaud them. Not everyone can afford to drop $120 for six action figures, and I’m glad you can still get a half-dozen McFarlane figures for around 80 bucks.

Not only does the Spartan Locke McFarlane figure include a rifle (with some nice paint deco on it), but he comes with a Magnum pistol as well. Hallelujah!

Back of Spartan Locke McFarlane Toys Halo 5 FigureOf course, I haven’t really talked about the Spartan Locke figure itself yet. From a sculpting perspective, he is absolutely everything you would expect from a McFarlane Halo figure: namely, immensely detailed with tons of textures all over the body.

No matter what angle you’re looking at this Locke action figure from–front, back, side, overhead view, whatever–there are a multitude of sculpting details that jump out at you.

Spartan Locke Halo 5: Guardians Action FigureConsidering that these Halo 5 Guardians figures cost less than what many stores are charging for vastly less-detailed Star Wars 3 3/4″ figures, these Halo action figures are a tremendous value in this day and age.

Halo 5 Locke Action Figure McFarlane ToysThe Wrong:

While the price on Halo figures hasn’t really gone up much since the days of the epic Halo Reach figures, the articulation sure hasn’t gone up either. In fact, it’s gone down.  You’ll notice that in my photos, Locke isn’t doing much besides standing around. That’s because he physically can’t do much besides stand around.

Midsection of Agent Locke Spartan FigureThe McFarlane Toys Halo 5: Guardians Spartan Locke figure’s upper-body articulation is halfway-decent, but far from perfect. He badly needs some sort of waist joint, and his shoulder joints simply don’t have a large enough range of motion to take on most fun firing poses.

The lower-body articulation on the Spartan Locke figure is appallingly bad, with Locke’s hips and knees having absurdly slight ranges of motion. Other than being posed slowly walking or just standing straight up, there’s basically no way to pose the McFarlane Locke. Hugely disappointing.

McFarlane Halo 5: Guardians Spartan Locke FigureIn addition, I’m not at all sold on the colors that McFarlane Toys chose for Locke. He looks far too greenish blue to me and not nearly enough silver or grey. Maybe this color scheme will be spot-on in-game, but from the promotional artwork and trailers I’ve seen, I’m not convinced.

Halo 5 Guardians Figures Spartan LockeThe Ridiculous:

Weak plastic and brittle weapons have been an issue with the McFarlane Halo figures since day one, and after all these years they still are. I broke Fred’s rifle just trying to gently place it into his hands, and I’ve heard numerous reports of others having rifles break because of cheap plastic. I was able to glue the rifle back together, but you can still see the faint breakage lines. And that’s besides the point–by now, the quality on these guns should have been improved. Shame, McFarlane!

McFarlane Halo 5 Guardians Series 1 CardbackThe problem is exacerbated by the fact that none of the Spartans’ hands have a trigger finger, making it impossible to get the figures to hold their rifles properly without customizing them the old-fashioned way (with a sharp blade).

Spartan Locke McFarlane Toys Halo 5 Figure ReviewOverall: It breaks my heart to start off my Halo 5 McFarlane figure review series with a negative review, but this Agent Locke figure is just not very good. The sculpting on Locke is incredibly detailed–and the price is definitely right–but his ludicrously poor articulation scheme, cheap accessories and questionable colors drain all the life out of this “toy”.

As much as I want to love this Spartan Locke action figure, it’s a major disappointment: I’ll be waiting with great anticipation for the Play Arts Kai Halo 5 Spartan Locke figure next year to replace this one.

  1. Is there any way of getting in contact with Todd McFarlane? As a Canadian Halo fan, I have nothing but negative things to say to him. In Canada, we only get the quality control failures that cost $20 each. Atrocious paint, loose joints, and poor construction which often equates to something like armor being HORRIFICALLY glued on at a wrong angle. For example, my Halo 4 Elite Zealot’s body armor was permanently twisted on its body. And before you ask, they ARE official. It’s about time I’ve gotten to the bottom of just what the hell is going on.

  2. Ive found Chief, Locke, Tanaka, and the Target and TRU exclusives. Cant find the other 3 main figures or other 2 exclusives yet. So far I agree with you on everything about Locke. I like the paint, packaging, and even the sculpt. It looks like Mcfarlane has put a bit more effort in these (maybe he realizes this is all he has left, after the AC failure and the decline of TWD line) But the articulation is terrible, NECA’s 18″ chief is better and thats saying something.

Since Mcfarlane refuses to update his website and Halofigurefourms is gone, does anyone know what stores the other two exclusives belong two? The white/blue spartan and unhelmeted Locke is still a mystery.

    • I think unhelmted locke will be a gamestop exclusive. Maybe the others will be Walgreens and toys r us.

    • Yeah it sucks that Halofigureforum is no more; I loved that site. I use to post a few reviews, comparison pics, UPC codes, and a few of my custom figures. Since the site is gone, I’m not in a huge rush to get the figures yet.; however, Spartan Locke is one of the main figures in the line I’m looking forward buy. This review was great, but I want to get the figure in my hands and see if I can get him in the “Nobel Six run”. I want to see how far I can push the figure’s joints .

  3. Hopefully I’ll be able to find the better quality ones first tomorrow. As for the color of the armoring, it’s fairly close: http://www.halopedia.org/images/8/84/H5G-Locke%26BR85.png. The undersuit coloring is definitely off though. I was planning on getting full sets of both Osiris and Blue team, but if the rest are like Locke, I will stick to only Blue team (no matter how bad they might be, I just REALLY need some Blue Team figures).

  4. I cant agree more about the colors they used on this… I havent seen it in person, but comparing these colors to the colors of the Locke statue that was also on Mcfarlane displays… I think these colors come off looking very Dead Space 2, or childish (The colors in Dead Space 2 were not childish however, but these are…)

    • This is a one-writer site, and sadly, I’ve lost a lot of interest with the lack of new Halo McFarlane Toys figures being released each year. I’ll still update from time-to-time and I’ll continue to pay for the servers to keep the archives of this site online, but the glory days of Halo collecting are behind us.

  5. So, we not only didn’t reclaim proper leg articulation, but lost even more?
    Wow.

  6. got it and took a hobby knife to it, has trigger fingers and half way decent leg articulation
